At the German Research Foundation’s “Futures of Sustainability” research center in Hamburg, scientists gather in mid-March to discuss state planning and post-growth. As Japanese philosopher Kohei Saito delivers his lecture, a certain pessimism hangs over the debate. Saito wonders how the economy and emancipation could be conceived in the face of the threat of climate collapse. In doing so, he connects with the ideas presented in his successful book “System Overthrow: Nature’s Triumph over Capitalism” (DTV, 2023).
