Agroecology is a science that uses ecological principles and methods to develop sustainable agricultural and food systems. Approaches have changed in recent years: the debate has shown that it is not enough to create islands that are successful examples of agroecological food production. Instead, agroecological approaches must take a holistic view of systemic issues and topics such as land concentration, processing, markets, labor and gender relations, consumption, and waste generation.

The Amazon region is known for the biodiversity of its ecosystems and the diversity of the peoples and communities living there. Here, scientific research on agroecology merges with traditional knowledge that has historically emerged from the close relationship between humans and nature. A comprehensive understanding of agroecological approaches in the Amazon region requires an analysis that includes the settlement process, the complex relationships between organizations, institutions, and the Amazonian peoples, and the challenges to applied forest management practices.
